Cleveland a déjà surpris tout le monde en sélectionnant l’ailier fort Anthony Bennett (UNLV) avec son premier choix. Alors que les rumeurs annonçaient plutôt un pivot, genre Nerlens Noel ou Alex Len.
Orlando a de son côté sélectionné Victor Oladipo (Indiana) alors que Washington a choisi Otto Porter (Georgetown). Charlotte, avec son quatrième choix, a choisi Cody Zeller (Indiana) alors que Phoenix mise sur Alex Len (Maryland) plutôt que sur Nerlens Noel (Kentucky). Le pivot de Kentucky a lui été drafté par New Orleans puis échangé à Philadelphie.
Dallas envoie Kelly Olynyk à Boston contre le 16e choix et de deux futurs choix de draft au second tour.
Trois Français font partis de cette nouvelle draft : Joffrey Lauvergne, Rudy Gobert, Livio Jean-Charles.
Rudy Gobert, sélectionné par Denver en 27e position, a ensuite été envoyé à Utah alors que Livio Jean-Charles était lui choisi par San Antonio à la 28e place.
Quant à Joffrey Lauvergne, il rejoindra Evan Fournier à Denver, puisque les Nuggets ont récupéré le 55e choix des Grizzlies dans le « swap » entre Kostas Koufos et Darrell Arthur.
Dans une cuvée 2013 très moyenne, les franchises NBA ont décidé de se tourner vers des joueurs « internationaux », et le premier tour établit un nouveau record avec 12 joueurs « étrangers » sélectionnés. L’ancien record appartenait à la draft 2011 avec 10 joueurs.
